This family of four was squeezed in a 2 bed/1 bath 1,222 SF split-level Craftsman home.  The goal of their two-story addition was to add 2 new bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, a play area and office space while minimizing the impact to their existing forest-like backyard full of established redwoods and protected oak trees.  The family desired to have a stronger connection to the yard and increase natural lighting into their habitable spaces.  By lowering one of the existing split level bedrooms and opening up the dead-end Kitchen into the new Family Room, a visual and spatial connection was established via new stairs which connected all of the key occupied areas.  Located in Alameda, California.
